Steelmen drop out of top six

-

Motherwell dropped out of the top six after suffering their fourth straight defeat, but frustrated boss Stephen Robinson said the performance against Kilmarnock was one of their best this season.

A Scott Boyd goal was enough to separate the sides, though the visitors created several gilt-edged chances, with only Killie keeper Jamie Macdonald keeping them at bay.

Robinson said:“i think everyone in the stadium saw that we played extremely well, and we got punished again for a mistake.

“Russell Griffiths has to be stronger from the cross, but he made a great save at the end to make up for it. It’s one of those things; he’s a young goalie, he has to learn.

“We didn’t get the result we needed but if we produce performances like that again we will win games.”

Craig Tanner forced a fine save, while at the other end Kris Boyd twice went close.

Macdonald saved brilliantly from Alex Fisher and that told in 42 minutes when Griffiths palmed a Chris Burke corner into the box and Scott Boyd bundled it over the line.

The Killie keeper again denied Fisher as he fired towards goal from 12 yards, but Griffiths redeemed himself by saving well from Jordan Jones.

Griffiths pulled off another fine save in the dying stages to deny Greg Kiltie but Motherwell left empty handed.
