DREAMMAKER FOUNDATION Ruby jets off to find Santa

Children enjoy Lapland fun

- Stefanie Mccourt

A Bothwell youngster enjoyed a magical trip to Lapland to meet Santa over the festive season.

Little Ruby Gibson (4) joined a group of children who were whisked away on the incredible adventure by the Les Hoey MBE Dreammaker Foundation.

The charity organises days out and special treats for youngsters with life-limiting illnesses, all led by Wishaw charity champ Les.

Ruby was invited along after being diagnosed with a kidney tumour in March 2017.

Thankfully, she was given the all-clear in November.

The group travelled to Finland and enjoyed a range of experiences including sleigh rides and meeting Santa and his elves. Ruby’s mum, Donna, said: “We were invited to join Les and his team on the trip to find Santa, and what a trip it was!

“All of the kids have some sort of life-threatening illness, but you would never have known.

“They were buzzing with excitement and it was wonderful to see their little smiles as they threw snowballs and lay making snow angels.

“The Foundation have been so kind to Ruby, and have helped get her through a lot of tough times by inviting her to a number of their events and parties.

“Myself and my husband Simon, along with her little brother Charlie, have also been invited to every event to ensure that we can create memories as a family unit.”

She continued: “Ruby has been through a lot, however in November she was given the all-clear and she requires no further chemotherapy.

“Finally we can all breathe again, and Lapland was an amazing way to sign off the year.

“Ruby will continue to be monitored by Glasgow Children’s Hospital, and we cannot thank all the staff on the cancer ward enough.

“We are very much looking forward to a healthy 2018 and for Ruby to return to nursery and get back to life as every four-year-old girl should.”

Les added: “This day has been in the planning for a year and is the biggest thing our wee charity has ever done.

“The smiles on the faces of the children was amazing.

“We would like to thank everyone who donated to this once-in-a-lifetime day.”
