£74,000 upgrade

- Shirley Bartynek

Roadworks are set to begin in Hamilton town centre next week.

More than £74,000 will be spent on upgrading the gas network around Hamilton town centre.

Motorists will face weeks of delays as SGN announce plans for the project, which will begin in Muir Street.

This essential work involves the replacement of old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply.

Following discussions with South Lanarkshire Council, the project will start on Monday, January 8, and will last for seven weeks.

A spokesperson for SGN said: “To ensure everyone’s safety, we will need to close Cadzow Street for approximately three weeks at the beginning of the project.

“We’ve split this final stage of the project into two phases to minimise disruption as much as possible.”

SGN will be working extended hours and at weekends to complete the work as quickly as possible.

Phase two will begin on Monday, January 29, for around four weeks.

SGN will be working in Muir Street between its junction with Lower Auchingramont Road and the nearby Lidl supermarket.

To allow engineers to work safely, they will need to restrict the westbound carriageway to one lane.

The spokesperson added: “We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks.

“We always aim to minimise disruption and we will make every effort to ensure our works are completed as soon as possible.”
