County duo hope for cup run

-

Wishaw will try again this weekend to force their way into the Scottish Cup fourth round, as they tackle Dundee Downfield at the Beltane.

On December 23 the county side hit back from conceding twice in seven minutes to earn a 2-2 draw and set the scene for a third-round replay on Saturday, but heavy snow put paid to that, with the tie officially postponed on Friday morning.

They will hope to get the game on, and progress to a fourthround derby clash against Forth Wanderers on Saturday, January 20.

Manager John Brogan said: “We’re fine with the result. It was disappointing to lose two goals inside seven minutes, but I’m encouraged by the way we came back to score twice within three minutes to draw 2-2.

“There was a strong wind blowing in the second half which made things difficult, but we’re quite happy to get a draw. Now we look forward to the replay at Beltane.”

Downfield scored in three minutes and doubled their lead four minutes later.

Dan Kindlan pulled a goal back in 33 minutes with an angled drive from the edge of the box.

Two minutes later Joe Mccafferty pounced on a Kindlan pass to equalise with a strong shot.

Thorniewood United drew 0-0 with East Kilbride Thistle a fortnight ago and will hope to go one better this weekend.

Club official Ian Mclaughlin commented: “It was a dire game. Both teams were ring-rusty and conditions were poor, with a high wind on a heavy pitch – certainly not suitable for good football.”

United were awarded a penalty in 25 minutes for a hand-ball incident that saw Thistle’s Callum Mclean sent off, but Aaron Neil’s penalty was turned round the post.

I’m encouraged by the way we came back to score twice in three minutes to draw 2-2. Now we look forward to the replay at Beltane John Brogan
