A WIN BUILT ON DESIRE

Canning hails character of his players to dump Well

- Andy Mcgilvray

Hamilton boss Martin Canning said the desire to win was “screaming” from his players as they dumped Motherwell 3-1 in their own back yard.

A Dougie Imrie penalty cancelled out Craig Tanner’s early opener before strikes from Rakish Bingham and Greg Docherty earned Accies a precious three points.

A delighted Canning said: “It showed a lot of character and it was a great performance all-in.

“In the first 10 minutes we didn’t turn up as well as we would have liked to, we gave Motherwell a goal of a start.

“But then I thought the desire to win was screaming out of everybody.

“In the second half we were by far the better team, we controlled it, we did exactly what you need to do.

“For the second goal, they made the wee mistake but Raks has to keep his composure, it’s a long way to run, and to have the composure to finish was excellent.

“Greg’s goal was fantastic. We know that if he gets you one v one like that he’s going to take it.

“We moved him out to right wingback for that purpose because we know he’s a threat in straight-line running.

“If he knocks it past you, very few will have the ability to turn, with his strength and power, and get back to catch him.

“It was a great third goal for us which made the game that little bit more comfortable.

“We defended our box really well. There were a lot of crosses in but big Xavier Tomas, Alex Gogic and Scott Mcmann were excellent. The whole squad did a great job and it’s great to go into this break with the three points.”

Canning said he’s looking to strengthen in the January window but confirmed that defender Georgios Sarris has played his last game for Hamilton.

And striker Antonio Rojano is facing a spell on the side-lines. The boss said: “We’re looking at one or two and we would like to strengthen if we can.

“Having spoken to [chairman] Ronnie Macdonald and [vice-chairman] Les Gray and the board, there’s definitely scope and money there to bring people in. So it’s a case of having a look to see if we can add people that we think can add value to the team.

“Once it all gets tidied up, I’m sure there will be a statement about Georgios Sarris. I’m not going to comment too much about it but he won’t play again.

“It’s up to Ronnie now to sit with his representatives and discuss whatever exit strategy there’s going to be for him.

“Antonio has an avulsion fracture in his foot, which happened against Partick Thistle, similar to David Templeton’s earlier in the season.

“He has tweaked his ligament and a wee bit of bone has broken away.

“Hopefully when we come back from the break, Antonio will be able to train again. We’re maybe talking then the end of January before he is back fit.”
