Soldier’s pride at honour
Neil Martin gets MBE
A solider from Hamilton has spoken of his pride at being awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
Warrant Officer First Class Neil Martin (43), is a full-time Reservist based at 160th Infantry Brigade and Headquarters Wales and was recognised for his “outstanding level of compassion and determination” in changing the lives of young people.
As the youth engagement officer for the Brigade, the married dad-oftwo has spearheaded a programme which involves partnering with organisations such as the Department of Work and Pensions, the probation services as well as colleges and training providers.
The course Neil developed has so far supported more than 150 young people into employment, with an equal balance between Regular and Reserve Forces, as well as finding jobs with civilian companies and organisations.
Neil has completed a full career in the Army having served with the Royal Military Police Special Investigation Branch and then the Army Reserves with the Royal Logistic Corps.
He said: “I was informed by the Brigadier before we broke up for Christmas and I have to say it was a complete shock to me.
“I am very proud and humble to have been selected, and look forward to carrying on work within the local community within Wales.
“My family were very excited about the news and also excited about potentially meeting the Queen and the award being given out at Buckingham Palace.
“It is an exceptional privilege and honour to be selected for such an award and I am really looking forward to attending London and being awarded the MBE.”
