BIRTHDAY WISH Agnes is 100 years young!

- Shirley Bartynek

A very special birthday has been celebrated by Hamilton lady Agnes Mclachlan within sight of the street where it all began for her – 100 years ago.

Born Agnes Lees on January 6, 1918, in the town’s Dalziel Street, she stayed there until the age of four before moving, with her family, to Reid Street in Burnbank.

During her school days, Agnes attended Glenlee Primary and then Hamilton Grammar.

Having been born during the First World War, she got married during the next conflict when, in 1942, Agnes wed Daniel Mclachlan, who was serving in the RAF at the time.

Between 1942 and 1945, Agnes worked in the office at Richmond Street Laundry and, like many others at the time, she spent her days not knowing if she would ever see her husband again.

Upon Daniel’s return from India they started their own business, a butcher’s shop in Mossend, by Bellshill, which they built into a successful and renowned cornerstone of the community.

In 1947, their son George was born, who would grow up to follow his parents into the family business.

Later that year Agnes, Daniel and George moved into the current family home a stone’s throw from the street where she had been born, which Agnes and Daniel had purpose-built and where she still resides today.

Agnes still has many friends and extended family in the area, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

And she was helped to celebrate her remarkable birthday by South Lanarkshire Provost Ian Mcallan, who presented her with a card, framed scroll and flowers, and by the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire for Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey, who officially Queen.

Agnes’s grandson, George Mclachlan said: “We celebrated gran’s birthday with a small party and cake with all our family, extended and near.

“We would like to say a very special happy birthday to her from all the family.” handed over a card from the
