Soccer squad scoop top trophy

Coach praises team after League Cup victory

- Leona Greenan

One of Blantyre Soccer Academy’s 2002 teams proudly picked up their first trophy of the year on Saturday.

The boys scooped the Central League Cup final by 2-1 after a hard fought tie with Airdrie Boys’ Club.

And the team have continued their success story after last season’s invincible run which saw them win 20 games out of 20 games to clinch the Lanarkshire Football Development Association League.

They also won the league cup and got to the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

Head coach Stevie Owens was delighted with the boys’ performance.

He told the Advertiser: “I am extremely proud of every single one of the boys, and the coaching staff, as everyone has worked really hard over the last year.

“It’s fair to say we have showed true grit and determination to get where we are today.”

“We have picked up five trophies over the last year and hopefully it won’t stop there.”

Meanwhile, Aileen Campbell, Scottish Government Minister for Public Health and Sport, is set to visit the Academy on Friday, January 26 at the Palace Grounds.

The MSP for Clydesdale will give a presentation to the girls’ team and will enjoy learning all about the work there.

Blantyre Soccer Academy is a registered charity whose objectives are to advance public participation in football by promoting the game through the provision of recreational facilities and activities.
