Reddo: Hostile Fir Park not a problem

Danny says Accies will cope with atmosphere

- Andy Mcgilvray

Danny Redmond says a hostile Fir Park crowd won’t faze Hamilton as they try to reach the Scottish Cup last 16.

The Liverpudlian midfielder has fond memories of celebrating with Accies fans when they beat Motherwell 3-1 at the same venue last month, and hopes they can do it again.

While Redmond doesn’t think it’s going to be easy to oust their derby rivals, he says they have proved they can do it.

Redmond said: “I think the 3-1 win set a bit of a marker. We went to Motherwell, to their ground, put in a good performance and got the win.

“On Saturday they’re going to want to rectify their performance on that day, but we have to put in the same performance, hopefully get the win and get through to the next round.

“When you go 1-0 down in a derby, as we did, it’s easy to get your heads down, but we have good character in the squad this season, and managed to get three goals, winning quite comfortably in the end, and hopefully we can do that on Saturday again.

“We’ve played in big games quite a lot in the past few years and we know what’s expected of us.

“We know when we go to the big grounds the fans are always against you when there’s a big crowd, but as a footballer you just blank that out and you just have to get on with it.

“When you go to Motherwell and you score three goals it’s great to see those scenes at the end of the game, when you’re celebrating with the fans.

“Fir Park is a close ground, the fans are close to you and everyone’s close together as a club.”

Following the cup clash, Hamilton have back-to-back home games against Hearts and Dundee on Wednesday and Saturday, then the same away from home against St Johnstone and Aberdeen.

It’s a hectic schedule, but Redmond is looking forward to.

He said: “It’s a lot of games in a small period of time, but as a footballer you would rather play in games than train, and obviously we need to get as many points on the board as we can.

“Hopefully we can pick up quite a few points in those games.”

Hamilton boss Martin Canning last week snapped up Chrysovalantis Kozoronis, with potentially more coming into the squad in the next week or two, but Redmond said that’s good for everybody.

He said: “It’s good for the club. The more competition you have the more you put into training, and it brings out the better side of you.

“There is competition for places, so you need to always want to do well, so it keeps the standard up in training, and that’s good.” one
