Accies pick up a curry house charity cheque

£1500 handed over

- Leona Greenan

Hamilton Accies picked up a spicy cheque for over £1500 from a town curry house.

The donation comes after the club were victims of a six-figure sum fraud.

And the £2562 from the Spice restaurant will help Accies with some of their projects in the community.

A spokesperson for the football club said: “As a longtime sponsor of Hamilton Academical FC, Spice sympathised with their local football club who were the recent victims of a major fraud.

“They wanted to show solidarity to a local business that serves the community as much as the Accies do.

“We are very grateful for this donation and for the support from Spice. This will help both our youth academy and the addiction programs that are delivered out of New Douglas Park.”

Back in October Hamilton Accies were devastated to learn that they had been victims to an elaborate ‘vishing’ fraud when a six-figure sum – understood to be £863,000 – was taken from their bank account.

At the time, directors confirmed that they were working with their bank to recover at least some of the funds and that they had put in their own cash to tide them over. However, they recently learned the bank would not be refunding their cash loss.

The Spice restaurant, on Bothwell Road, has been in Hamilton for nearly 20 years. They are longtime supporters and sponsors of Hamilton Accies, and their donation comes from their new ‘Spicey Private Members’ Club’ in their upstairs venue.

Any profits will be used to support community programs such as Accies Youth Academy.

The restaurant also donated £382 to the Blameless charity, that supports families affected by addiction.
