Gold for sporting stars

- Andy Mcgilvray

Hard work has paid off for a Hamilton school after they were given a gold award by sportscotland, the national agency for sport.

Over 2017, principal teacher Jennifer Neilly worked hard with the organisation to increase sporting opportunities for everyone at Townhill Primary.

Lunchtime, after-school and leadership activities were accessible for all at the school, including netball, football, dance, judo and lots more.

Townhill Primary were presented with their award by Steven Lytham, partnership manager at sportscotland.

In addition, Tony Mcdaid, South Lanarkshire Council’s executive director of education resources, and Garry Maguire, quality link officer, joined them for their very special assembly.

The award encourages sporting links between schools and the communities around them.

Stewart Harris, sportscotland chief executive, extended his congratulations to the school.

He said: “Congratulations to all the staff and pupils at Townhill Primary School – they should be extremely proud of this fantastic achievement.

“Not only have they put physical education and sport at the heart of their school and local community, but they have managed to do so in a way that encourages all pupils to engage in physical activity, whilst having fun at the same time.”

Townhill Primary would like to extend special thanks to Lesley Scanlon, their Active Schools co-ordinator, who worked with Miss Neilly to organise, plan and train staff and pupils, in order to provide such a wide choice of sports and health clubs.

They would also like to thank Laurie Mccormack of P7 and the rest of the health group for being so enthusiastic in promoting clubs within the school.
