A man kicked his partner so severely during a drunken row that she suffered two broken ribs.

Laura Mcintyre also caused doctors concern because the attack resulted in a collapsed lung.

Steven Summers laid into her as she lay helpless on the bathroom floor of their Stonehouse home, Hamilton Sheriff Court was told.

Summers (34), now of New Trows Road, Lesmahagow, admitted assaulting Ms Mcintyre, causing her to lose consciousness and sustain severe injury, at the house in Brankston Avenue, Stonehouse, on July 4 last year.

The couple had been watching football on TV with a friend without incident. The assault happened after the friend left.

Michael Mcintosh, prosecuting, told the court: “Ms Mcintyre’s memory is hazy as she lost consciousness, but she recalls waking up on the bathroom floor, being kicked on the head and side by the accused. She screamed for help.”

The alarm was raised and Ms Mcintyre’s brother nearby house.

The prosecutor added: “The accused answered the door and told the brother ‘Look at my face. Laura started all this’. The brother recalls the accused having a small scratch on his face.

“He then found his sister on the floor, upset, struggling to breathe and, in his words, with her face all bashed up.”

Ms Mcintyre was taken to Wishaw General Hospital. She had two broken ribs, a black eye and a cut to her ear. Of most concern was a collapsed lung. However, this re-expanded without the need for treatment.

Defence agent John Costello said that despite the attack the couple wish to get back together.

He added: “Both parties had embarked on a fairly heavy drinking session. There was an argument and during the course of that Ms Mcintyre attacked Mr Summers, causing scratches.

“There was an element of selfdefence, but not enough to meet the legal requirement.”

Sentence was deferred until February 16 for background reports and Summers had his bail continued. arrived from a
