Help for domestic abuse victims

- Leona Greenan

Lanarkshire business owners came together at Christmas to form a project aimed at helping victims of domestic abuse.

The group, called 21st Century Angels, formed with the backing of Larkhallbased charity Families Like Us in order to raise funds for ladies being supported by Women’s Aid.

Their project aimed to turn monetary donations, given via collection cans at various businesses, into gift vouchers that were then handed to the Women’s Aid service users prior to Christmas.

This allowed the women to purchase gifts for the festive season.

Families Like Us teamed up with Deja Elite Boutique, Wellman Taxis, Braveheart Gym, Dance Inc Bothwell, Your Face Cosmetics Uddingston, and The Smile Clinic Uddingston.

The project was hailed a success and it was revealed this week that around 25 women received gift vouchers.

Lesley Robertson, a single parent who set up the Families Like Us charity, said: “Families Like Us would like to say a huge thanks to everyone who donated to our 21st Century Angels campaign and to all the businesses that got involved.

“Thanks also to also Thomas Agnew from Blu Print and a special thanks must go to Clare Welsh from Wellman Taxis.”

And Lesley added:“it’s so important for us all to work together to create a better future for our mums out there and Families Like Us are delighted to be able to help this happen.”
