Mass closures after storm hits
Schools and nurseries close doors
The `Beast from the East’ hit Lanarkshire yesterday (Wednesday), shutting schools and nurseries across the area.
Both South and North Lanarkshire Councils announced the closure of all schools early yesterday morning due to the weather conditions.
South Lanarkshire Council alerted parents on their social media sites, writing: “Schools and weather update. All South Lanarkshire schools and nurseries will be closed today (Wednesday). This is due to expected worsening weather and road conditions throughout the day. Colleges and nurseries were also closed.”
The local authority also posted on Tuesday night around 9pm that there were 23 gritters out “working hard to keep the roads clear”.
North Lanarkshire Council, also took to the internet yesterday, posting on Facebook: “All North Lanarkshire schools will be closed today. Amber Met Office warning for snow remains in place – please avoid travel. If you do travel be prepared for severe disruption.”
Further education establishments, including the University of the West of Scotland’s Hamilton campus and all campuses at New College Lanarkshire, also took the decision to close.
Residents woke to several inches of snow on the ground, with many in the area struggling to get cars out their driveways.
South Lanarkshire Council also advised residents that there would be a delay on the bin uplifts.
The posted on Facebook yesterday: “We have delayed the start of our bin uplifts today. Please leave bins out and we will get to them as soon as we can.
“Some of our civic amenity sites are struggling to open this morning but we are doing our best to get them open in difficult conditions.”
Earlier this week The Met Office issued an amber alert for snow in Lanarkshire, however that was expected to escalate to a red weather warning.
