Couple celebrate 60 years together

- Shirley Bartynek

Ashgill couple David and Margaret Mcintosh marked their Diamond Wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day.

Provost Ian Mcallan and Depute Lord Lieutenant Millar Stoddart joined family and friends to present the happy couple with gifts of flowers and whisky, along with a card from the Queen, to mark their 60 years of marriage.

The couple met as youngsters working at Highlees Farm in the early 1950s but lost touch when Davie left to work at Prentice’s blacksmiths in Larkhall.

However, romance was not to be thwarted and they crossed paths again when Margaret was 21 and Davie 27. They married three years later on February 14,1958.

The couple went on to have two sons and two daughters, the youngest of whom are twins.

Margaret stopped worked to bring up her family but once they had left school she worked in Eadie the Bakers for 18 years, while Davie spent his career at Prentice’s.

Now grandparents of nine and great-grandparents of two – with two more due this year - the couple also enjoyed a celebratory meal at the weekend with their extended family.

Provost Mcallan said: “A Valentine’s Day wedding is always special and marking that with the happy couple 60 years on makes it even more so.

“I am honoured to be a part of such a significant celebration.”
