EILIDH’S LEGACY LIVING ON...

Mum Elaine hails £120K raised

- Kirsten Mcstay

A year after she passed away, Eilidh Mchugh’s family have vowed to make a difference to people’s lives in her name.

The 22-year-old Hamilton student died after a short battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Eilidh was nearing the end of her pre-registration year to become a pharmacist when she died suddenly Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

And her mum Elaine said that, even after a year, it is hard and some days are dark.

But her family find a real comfort fundraising in their daughter’s name.

Elaine said: “We are very lucky. Our girls (Eilidh and Kerry) are our friends. We spent so many happy times together, we are now as a family trying to learn to grow around our grief.

“We were not given a choice about losing Eilidh, we do have a choice to make a difference to people’s lives in Eilidh’s name.

“We want to use our experience of grief to make that difference. The fund will be at £120,000 this month.

“We have learned the importance of reaching out to people in need. Our family and close friends have reached out to us and in the bleak and dark days, their compassion and kindness has lifted us and given us strength and courage.

“We are overwhelmed at the fund value and how so many people have used their gifts and talents to help reach where we are at.

“Eilidh is our light wherever we are – on a daily basis we try to find the light in the darkness.

“Eilidh is our footprint. Kerry is a gift in our life.”

Since her death last March, Eilidh’s family and friends have made it their mission to fundraise in her memory.

Over the past year they have set up many fundraising events which have generated almost £120,000 for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

Fun days, hair shaves, ladies’ day, fun runs, and a tiara ball are only a handful of the events that have been staged in Eilidh’s memory.

The Beatson cared for Eilidh during her short battle with cancer and at the time, Eilidh’s family said the support they offered was ‘second to none’.
