Environment on cubs’ agenda

MSP hails work of 112th Lanarkshire

-

Community work and environmental awareness was top of the agenda for the 112th Lanarkshire Scout Group as the Cub division showcased their work to MSP Christina Mckelvie.

The group, based in Our Lady and St Anne’s chapel hall, were busy working towards their Environmental Conservation Badge as they showed the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse representative their garden project.

The visit to the group comes as part of Ms Mckelvie’s partnership with Scouts Scotland to work towards the Youth Advocacy Award.

The award, which demonstrates a commitment to continue to campaign on issues that impact on young people, involves completing a range of tasks, including inviting the Scout group for a tour of the Scottish Parliament.

Ms Mckelvie said: “It was a sheer delight to meet with the cubs of the 112th Lanarkshire Scout Group and I thank them for showing me their outstanding work.

“I was thoroughly impressed with the real care the cub scouts have for their local community and I can’t wait to see their garden project bloom in the spring.

“The leaders and volunteers of the group deserve tremendous credit for instilling a real sense of pride and responsibility within the cubs.

“I wish them well and look forward to seeing them again soon as I work in partnership with Scouts Scotland for my own Youth Advocacy Award.”

Assistant Group Scout Leader of the 112th Lanarkshire Scout Group, Gary Ward, added: “It is great to see our local MSP visiting our group and speaking to the young people within the Cub section about their environmental badge

“The positive impact that Scouting can have on a young conservation person and volunteer is evident in so many ways and it is very encouraging to see Christina engaging with and promoting this.

“I hope that we will have further contact with Christina and members of the council in our work throughout the years, to demonstrate the strong links that Scouting has with the people within our community.”
