Card from the Queen for Sam and Betty

- Stefanie Mccourt

Hamilton couple Sam and Betty Hewitt have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

The couple met in 1955 at a house service in Hillhouse that had been initiated by the Rev Jim Gossip, prior to the construction of the then Hillhouse Hall Church, which in turn preceded the current building.

They got engaged on February 2, 1957, and were married on March 1, 1958, in the then Gilmour Memorial Church, Burnbank, by the Rev John Paterson, assisted by the Rev Jim Gossip.

Their three children were born over the following nine years – Brenda, in 1959; Brian, in 1963; and Alan, in 1967.

Honeywell, at Newhouse, provided employment for 25 years before work saw the family move to Belgium in 1974.

They returned to Scotland 11 years later and retirement followed two years after that, in 1987.

Shortly afterwards, they started a small sub-contract business, which successfully lasted for three years.

Throughout it all, however, the couple have been heavily involved in church affairs all of their lives.

Sam has served as an elder for more than 60 for 25 years.

They officially celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this month and, to help mark the occasion, South Lanarkshire Provost Ian Mcallan and Deputy Lieutenant for Lanarkshire John Brown visited the couple.

The provost presented them with a card, framed scroll, whisky and flowers from the council, and the Deputy Lieutenant officially handing over a card from the Queen. years, and Betty
