Tyres targeted in slash spree

Police plea as 34 vehicles damaged

- Shirley Bartynek

Police are appealing for witnesses after more than 30 vehicles had their tyres slashed overnight between Thursday and Friday, April 5 and 6.

Officers say the incidents took place in three streets in the Hillhouse and Udston area of Hamilton from around 11.30pm onwards.

Investigations into the “totally random” vandalism were continuing this week.

It is believed that around 34 vehicles parked on Clarkwell Road, Bellhaven Road and Denholm Terrace, had some or multiple tyres slashed on their vehicles.

The first incident was reported to police at around 11.30pm in Denholm Terrace.

Sergeant Bob Chalmers at Hamilton Police said: “The majority of vehicle owners woke on the Friday morning to the damage, and then reported it to police.

“This type of behaviour has never been known here and appears totally random and not directed at any particular street.

“PCS Porteous and Philip are the local officers for Hillhouse and Udston and have been working solely on these crimes in an attempt to not only identify the offender or offenders, but obtain sufficient evidence to present it to the court.

“Enquiries are being made locally and residents are being spoken to in attempt to piece together all the information.

“I understand the crimes have been highlighted online via social media and various comments suggest that people may know who is responsible.

“I would urge anyone who can identify the person responsible or may have CCTV, mobile phone or dashcam footage to email police on Lanarkshirelpsthamilton@scotland.pnn.police.uk where I will personally pick it up, or call 101.”
