Milton view Popular head to retire
Dear Editor Can I take this opportunity through the letters page to publicly thank and wish Mr Eddie Morrison, Head Teacher at St John Ogilvie High School an enjoyable retirement.
Mr Morrison will retire later on this year.
It will be a sad loss to St John Ogilvie and to South Lanarkshire Council.
Mr Morrison is an inspirational figure, dedicated, hard working and enthusiastic – a credit to the education system and himself.
Mr Morrison is similar to my old teacher Tommy Gilligan.
They don’t make teachers like them anymore.
Mr Morrison, I look forward to attending your retirement Mass later on this year.
Councillor Bert Thomson What has happened to the English Language?
This morning a TV presenter was heard to say, “I just knowed that was going to happen”.
In recent outside broadcasts, I discovered that Scotland is covered in locks, as in Lock Katreen (sic), Lock Lomond and Lock Ness and that the countryside is “awrin spiring”.
The words “start” and “begin” have been consigned to the literary dustbin as everything now “kicks off ”.
Perhaps the most annoying and ubiquitous phrase is that used by weather presenters when they advise us to “wrap up warm”. Not only is it patronising, it is grammatically incorrect by substituting an adjective for an adverb.
All these examples are from BBC programmes which used to be the standard for good grammar and pronunciation.
No wonder standards of literacy and grammar are falling in our young people.
John L Rimmer Park Road Hamilton Dear Editor, This June will mark Animal Aid’s first ever Summer Vegan Pledge – a 30-day vegan pledge that gives nonvegans, and those curious about a plant-based diet, all of the information and help they need to go vegan for a month, and hopefully stay vegan thereafter.
With the number of vegans in the UK growing by more than 350 per cent in ten years, and a recent study suggesting that now seven per cent of UK adults identify as vegans, it has never been easier to adopt a plantbased diet.
The number of vegan products has grown rapidly with new vegan products hitting shelves seemingly on a daily basis.
There are now vegan alternatives to almost everything – including ‘chicken’ nuggets, ice-cream, burgers, and even steak available in supermarkets, local shops, coffee shops, restaurants and beyond.
A vegan diet is kinder to animals, it is better for the environment and it is also healthy.
Sign up for Animal Aid’s Summer Vegan Pledge today: www.govegan. org.uk or phone 01732 364 546 extension 223.
