Young stars are performing well

-

Several young badminton stars caught the eye at the Under-13 and 17 National Junior Championships at Ravenscraig in Motherwell last weekend.

Motherwell’s Matthew Waring was second seed in both under-13 singles and doubles, with Glasgow’s Karan Shah, but fell to top seed Ben Riddle in the singles, and Riddle and Joseph O’neil Ferrero in the doubles.

The singles final was tense, with Riddle edging the first game 24-22 before claiming the second 21-9.

Doubles was a similar story, with a 21-16 13-21 21-15 scoreline, before Riddle and Brooke Stalker teamed up to beat Waring and Katrina Chan in the mixed doubles final as well.

In the under-17 competition there was an upset for top seed Michael Mcguire of Bothwell, who was defeated in the boys’singles final by Callum Smith 21-12 21-19. Smith and Calum Flockhart then beat Mcguire and Kenneth Cheung in the boys’doubles.

There was joy for Mcguire though, as he and Alice Campbell beat Smith and Jodie Harris in the mixed doubles final.
