Lanark United and Blantyre Vics went through to the second round of the Central League Cup, but Forth Newmains and Shotts all crashed out.

Lanark United beat Maryhill 4-1 and Vics triumphed 2-0 at Neilston.

The young Lanark side confidentl­y took the game to their opponents, who sit two divisions above them.

Maryhill took the lead but Lanark levelled in 23 minutes when Ronan Kearney raced onto a Dan Mchugh pass, was brought down, and Shaun Gallagher netted from the spot.

Lanark took the lead in 51 minutes when a great ball by Grant Gaffney found Scott Schonevill­e on the right and he beat a defender and the keeper to roll it home.

Martin Smith then sent PJ O’donnell free and his pass released Kearney on the left, who raced in on goal to place a shot past the keeper for a 3-1 lead.

Lanark ended the tie as a contest in 71 minutes when Gaffney was brought down and Gallagher scored his second penalty.

Vics went ahead through a Nadeem Zeb shot from a Dale Jones pass, then Declan Brown clinched the tie with a free-kick goal in the second half.

Manager John Gibson said: “it was a good win. We played well and I thought we controlled play in the first half.”

Shotts lost 4-1 at home to Gartcairn, with Stevie Aitken getting their goal.

Newmains United lost 15-0 at home to Cambuslang Rangers. Other than the Scottish Cup semi-final first leg at Wishaw’s Beltane, it’s an all-league card , following the first round of midweek fixtures last night (Wednesday).

In the Super First Division, Larkhall host Irvine Meadow for the second time in three weeks, with Jags having knocked them out of the West of Scotland Cup with a 4-0 win, and with all four goals coming in the last quarter of the game.

Three county clubs have home ties in the Central First Division, with Forth Wanderers v Rossvale; Lesmahagow v Greenock; Thorniewoo­d v Shotts and Blantyre Vics away to Glasgow Perthshire.

In the Central Second Division, Carluke Rovers are at home to table-toppers Gartcairn, and Newmains United host Vale of Clyde, while Royal Albert are away to St Anthony’s in a promotion clash.

Lanark United head for Dunipace, and Bellshill are at Johnstone Burgh.
