Birthday girl Lottie turns 100
Card from Queen to mark special day
There were celebrations galore in Blantyre recently after one woman celebrated turning 100.
Centenarian Mrs Lottie Reader marked her special birthday surrounded by family as well as enjoying a visit from South Lanarkshire Provost Ian Mcallan.
Provost Mcallan, accompanied by Depute Lieutenant Sandy Wilkie, handed over a card and flowers from the council, whilst Depute Lieutenant Wilkie presented a birthday card from HM Queen.
Sheffield-born Lottie who also enjoyed a birthday party in her honour attended by friends, family and her two greatgrandchildren, delighted both the Provost and Depute Lieutenant with stories of her youth, during which time she was named a ‘Woman of Steel’ by the city of Sheffield for her role on the railways during WW2.
Born on March 29, 1918, Lottie’s father was killed in World War 1. Tragically her mother died shortly afterwards and young Lottie was raised by grandmothers.
After she left school, she worked in a laundry, before meeting and marrying George, and moving to Mansfield in Nottinghamshire.
In 1980, after George died, Lottie moved to Blantyre to be closer to her daughter and three grandchildren and became an active member of her local pensioners club where she enjoyed singing and dancing and going on outings with the many friends she made there.
Provost Mcallan: “What an interesting visit we had with Lottie, who has lived an extraordinary life.
“She regaled us both with many stories of her life both in Sheffield and, in later life, here in South Lanarkshire. She is truly an inspiration.”
