Provost pays special tribute

- Shirley Bartynek

South Lanarkshire Council paid tribute at the weekend to workers killed, disabled, injured or made unwell by their work.

Workers’ memorial Day was held on Saturday, April 28, and members of the public gathered outside the council’s headquarters to mark it.

Provost Ian Mcallan was honoured to lay a wreath and make a speech at the memorial.

He paid tribute to council road worker Gary Anderson (58), of East Kilbride, who was struck by a truck and killed last summer while carrying out resurfacing works.

Provost Mcallan said in his speech on Saturday: “On workers’ memorial Day we come together to remember every employee who never made it home safely from work. And, of course, we particularly remember our colleague, Gary Anderson, who tragically died in an accident at work just last summer.

“In the council’s 21-year history, Gary’s loss is the only one of its kind.

“But it cuts deep, and reminds us that it is still one too many.

“South Lanarkshire Council has long supported workers’ Memorial Day and, more importantly, the message it promotes.

“In fact today marks the 10th event to be held where we stand now, since this particular memorial was unveiled in 2009.

“From an idea instigated by our JTUC colleagues, it stands as a permanent reminder of our joint commitment to remember those lost.

“We also fly the flag at half mast in respect for lives lost in workplaces both at home and abroad.”
