Top dog takes a bow-wow Deniro is bark by popular demand

- Shirley Bartynek

A Larkhall pooch made his stage debut last week in a smash hit musical.

Bulldog Deniro, from Netherburn, landed the starring role in the Glasgow show Legally Blonde the Musical.

He auditioned for the role of Rufus, a part certainly not to be sniffed at.

And his owner Annis Sweeney, said she was thrilled that her pooch had a starring role, and that he loved taking part.

She said: “He has just been fantastic, he is so chilled and laid back and that’s why he was great for the role.

“He loved being made a fuss over and getting a few more treats than normal. “It has been a great experience.” Deniro starred alongside Eastenders’ actor Rita Simmons, singer Lucie Jones – who is representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with Never Give Up On You, Emmerdale’s Bill Ward and of course, Elle’s dog Bruiser.

Earlier this year, the producers of the West End production issued a casting call for a four-legged star to appear on stage as character Paulette Bonafonté’s dog.

The three final dogs were Deniro, Tia from East Kilbride and Guinness from Penilee – all of whom were bulldogs. However, the standout performer was Deniro who transferred that to the stage on Monday night.

And he stole the show, with the audience ‘oohing and aahing’ each time he appeared on stage.

Legally Blonde the Musical is an all-singing, all-dancing romantic comedy, that is billed as a fun-filled, feel-good pink fest.

The hit show is based on the 2001 comedy film starring Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon.
