Litter bit of effort goes a long way

- Kirsten Mcstay

Hamilton Ladies Rugby team have been hard at work keeping the town tidy, all while taking part in a monthly fitness challenge.

In the last few months, the team have been running and doing speed and endurance challenges – but for April they decided to do something which would help the community too.

They decided that litter picking would be a way to combine staying fit and keeping the local area clean and tidy.

So far, an incredible 90 bags of rubbish have been collected from the areas the team have targeted.

The ladies began planning the cleanup and decided to tackle the route from the Palace Grounds to Chatelherault as that’s where they do a lot of their fitness challenges.

And the team have also been working with Starbucks at the Palace Grounds for the clean-up.

Store manager Louise Purdie sorted them out with some teas and coffees after their latest effort.

Some staff from Starbucks even joined the ladies to help litter-pick in the spot between the retail park and Palace Grounds, which seems to be a problem area.

Vice captain of the ladies’ team, Carey Pegrum said: “The Hamilton Ladies have worked really hard this month to tidy up litter hotspots around our town.

“They have shown great community spirit and brilliant teamwork by dedicating some of their spare time to restore these areas, and highlight some of the beautiful walking routes Hamilton has to offer.

“As vice-captain, it was great to see our team working hard together off the pitch too! I’m extremely proud of all their efforts.”
