Population is on the rise again
Latest statistics revealed
New figures have revealed that the population of Lanarkshire is 658,130.
The National Records of Scotland (NRS) say that the numbers living here continue to rise.
There were 318,170 people living in South Lanarkshire and 339,960 in North Lanarkshire.
These latest figures from the NRS are from the middle of last year.
In the year to June 30, 2017, South Lanarkshire’s population rose by 1070 from 317,100 to 318,170.
And the ten-year figure from June 2007 witnessed a rise of 7790 (2.5 per cent) from 310,380.
The average age in South Lanarkshire is 43 and 17 per cent of the population are aged under 16; 63 per cent are working age; and 20 per cent are pensioners.
Migration in South Lanarkshire over the last year had 9129 people come into the area and 7851 head out.
Of the arrivals, 7225 per cent hailed from elsewhere in Scotland, 1381 came from the rest of the UK and 523 came from overseas.
And of the 7851 people leaving, 6023 went to somewhere else in Scotland, 1286 headed elsewhere in the UK and 542 went overseas.
From June 2016 to June 2017, the population of North Lanarkshire rose by 570 from 339,390 to 339,960.
The ten-year figure from June 2007 witnessed a rise of 8790 (2.7 per cent) from 331,170 to 339,960.
And the average age in North Lanarkshire is 41 with 19 per cent of the population aged under 16, 64 per cent of working age; and 17 per cent are pensioners.
Migration in North Lanarkshire over the last year had 7692 arrive and 6958 leave.
Of the people arriving, 6023 per cent came from elsewhere in Scotland, 1085 per cent from elsewhere in the UK and 584 per cent from overseas.
And of the people 6958 leaving, 5457 moved elsewhere in Scotland, 967 went elsewhere in the UK and 534 went overseas.
South Lanarkshire’s population density reveals there are 180 people living per sq km, while the figure in neighbouring North Lanarkshire is 723.
