Poster child for keeping Calder clean

-

Blantyre environmental group Friends of the Calder were delighted to come across anti-litter posters which were designed by pupils of High Blantyre Primary School recently.

In fact they were so impressed with the designs they sought permission from the school to turn them into signage for the town.

The move came about after principal teacher at the school, Mr Tony Mayer who supports the children’s eco-committee, came up with the idea of running the poster competition and asked pupils to create messages and designs that would discourage people from throwing away their litter.

Megan Jump produced the winning mascot and message –‘The Litter Pup’ and her message was,‘be like me, the Litter Pup and always pick your rubbish up’. Simple, but effective and Friends of the Calder loved it!

Thanks to the wonderful work of Friend of the Calder, Jim Crossan, signage was designed which incorporated the winning design and the top 10 posters from the competition and three signs were then produced, which are now proudly placed around the Calder.

Friends of the Calder chairperson, Susan Lindner-kelly said: “We love the Calder. The last thing we want to see is rubbish thrown all over the place.

“Our children have asked us not to do it, so we’re hoping people using our amazing greenspace take notice. The school and nursery children regularly use this area, so it’s even more important that we keep it clean.

“Big thanks to Megan Jump and the other children at High Blantyre Primary – you have done a great job!’

Following on from the launch of the new litter signage, as part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful‘spring Clean’ campaign, Friends of the Calder carried out a litter pick and collected over 40 bags of rubbish recently.
