Munday sets a date for summit bid

Adventurer attempting to scale Everest

- Andy Mcgilvray

Bothwell adventurer Ricky Munday expects to start his summit attempt on the north face of Everest tomorrow (Friday).

If forecasts are accurate, Munday and his companions should be moving to Camp 3 today (Thursday), which is 8300 metres up the 8848m mountain.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Ricky said: “After a very restful break in New Tingri at 4800m, where we posted 95 per cent plus oxygen levels, we’ve arrived back at Everest base camp.

“The plan is set, we move tomorrow (Sunday). The jet stream is forecast to move off the summit of Everest.”

Ricky then set out a diary of what the team expects to achieve this week.

On Sunday they were to move to Advanced Base Camp (6400m), rest on Monday, then move to Camp 1 on Tuesday, at a height of 7050m.

Wednesday would see them move to Camp 2, at 7700m.

The hope on Friday is to summit the largest mountain in the world and descend back to Camp 1 if possible.

Ahead of the planned event, Ricky said: “I want to thank every single person who has pledged, donated, commented or sent messages of support.

“Your support means more to me than you could possibly imagine. Thank you sincerely.”

Accomplished climber Ricky attempted to climb Everest last year, but turned back at Camp 2 due to a mixture of ill health and an unsustainable use of oxygen.
