Well up for a bit of Banter

Players and fans record tune

- Kirsten Mcstay

Motherwell FC players and fans rallied together to re-release a famous Fir Park tune ahead of this weekend’s Scottish Cup final.

Local band the Banter Thiefs put out a Facebook appeal calling all supporters to help them re-record the 1969 classic Up The Well.

But it wasn’t just the fans who turned up at Fir Park ready to belt out a few bars.

Players Chris Cadden, Liam Grimshaw, Richard Tait and Cedric Kipre all got the chance to showcase their singing voices in the single.

The song was originally released in 1969 and is a firm favourite at Fir Park with the lyrics ‘Claret and amber colours true, far ahead of green and blue’.

Derek Watson, of the Banter Thiefs, said: “The club have been fantastic. We’ve recorded it all up at Fir Park and first-team players and fans got involved to add vocals.

“We really want to encapsulate the community spirit ahead of this cup final – with club and fans coming together, there’s a real buzz about the place.

“It’s all been Motherwell fans who have produced the song, created the artwork etc.”

The song was played when Motherwell beat Hamilton Accies 3-0 on the last game of the season.

And the new version will be available to buy at Ovosi clothing, Manse Road, on Thursday.

Motherwell will play Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.

You can watch a video of players recording the tune at the Hamilton Advertiser’s Facebook page.
