Milestone for bowling club
MSP’S Holyrood congratulations
MSP Margaret Mitchell lodged a motion in parliament recently after attending Bothwell Bowling Club’s 150th anniversary celebration.
The motion congratulates Bothwell Bowling Club established in 1868, with the ladies’ section being formed in 1931 - on celebrating their anniversary.
It also recognises the success of male and female members throughout its history in the Scottish Singles, British Isles Championship, District Finals, Scottish Pairs and Scottish Triples Cup.
It further applauds the fact that there has also been representation in international championships, and wishes the club future success and prosperity.
Mrs Mitchell went along to the opening of the green at Bothwell Bowling Club for the special occasion.
President Kevin Moore also welcomed a number of guests along to the day including the Rev. J M Gibson, Councillors Maureen Devlin and Kenny Mccreary and Nick O’neil, president of Bothwell Community Council.
Representing the sport of bowls were Bill Knox, president, Bowls Scotland and David Mcdonald, secretary, Lanarkshire Bowling Association, together with other office bearers and presidents and members from other local clubs.
After a short game enjoyed by both club members and visitors a meal and hospitality was provided in the clubhouse.
A very pleasant day was rounded off with a dance at night music being provided by Ian Cowan.
Margaret Mitchell MSP said: “This is a milestone anniversary for Bothwell Bowling Club, which was founded as an elite men-only club but today has a membership of men, women and younger players from all walks of life.
“It’s achieved immense success in both Scottish and British championships, as well as being recognised internationally.
“Locally, it’s a vibrant social hub of village activity where everyone who visits the club receives a warm welcome.”
