A new mum this week told of her shock at delivering her first child – despite not even knowing she was pregnant.

Lisa Mcphie (25) made a dash to the University Hospital Wishaw last Monday morning with what she thought was ‘terrible period cramps’.

However, less than an hour later she was a mum. Lisa said: “We called a taxi and we were taken to the A&E department. The first time I knew I was pregnant was when the baby’s head was out in the A&E reception.

“The nurses were saying ‘You need to keep taking the gas and air, you are giving birth right now’.

“I told them ‘I can’t be’ and ‘I am meant to be at work in two hours’. ”

However at around 6.45am, baby Oscar Charlie Mcphie was born weighing 5lbs 2oz.

“The first time I knew I was pregnant was when the baby’s head was out in the A&E reception.”

That is the remarkable story from a new mum who received the shock of her life last week – when she found out she was having a baby despite not knowing she was pregnant.

Lisa Mcphie headed to University Hospital Wishaw last Monday morning (May 7) with what she thought was `really bad period pains’ but she was actually in the final stages of labour.

The 25-year-old, who works as a sales advisor for Optical Express in Glasgow, had no symptoms of pregnancy throughout the nine months.

Lisa, who lives with her aunt Joanne and uncle Stevie at their home in Mossend, explained: “I had really bad stomach cramps at around 6am.

“At first my aunt thought it was something to do with my periods but the pain got worse and I said `I need to go to hospital’.

“We called a taxi and were taken to the A&E department. The first time I knew I was pregnant was when the baby’s head was out in the A&E reception.

“The nurses were saying `You need to keep taking the gas and air, you are giving birth right now.’

“I told them `I can’t be’ and `I am meant to be at work in two hours’.’”

However, at around 6.45am, baby Oscar Charlie Mcphie was born weighing 5lbs 2oz.

Lisa explained that she had no usual pregnancy signs during the nine months.

She said: “I had no sickness, no usual signs of pregnancy and still had my period throughout and no weight gain. Doctors and nurses thought the baby was premature because of his initial weight. But they now believe he was full term.

“I had been to the doctor twice throughout my pregnancy.

“The first time I thought I had pulled a muscle in my leg but it turns out it was Oscar who was sitting on my sciatic nerve. The second time I found a lump in my breast but after an ultrasound I was assured it was fatty tissue –it turned out to be milk ducts forming.”

Lisa says that her family are friends have been really supportive since she returned home a new mum. She said: “Once everyone got over the initial shock, they have been amazing. They have been really helpful. I am now up to my eyes in baby clothes.

“Oscar is just great and he’s eating and sleeping.

“I phoned my work to let them know I wouldn’t be in that morning because I had just given birth – and they didn’t believe me at first.”
