A support group based in Hamilton – run by drug and alcohol charity Addaction – won a Scottish sightseeing day trip.

It came after members displayed artwork at Hepatitis Scotland’s display in the Gallery of Modern Art.

Positive Support’s personal creations won ‘overall best artwork’.

Their day trip visited Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the famous Kelpies statues.

Positive Support helps people affected by blood conditions, like viral hepatitis and HIV, across North and South Lanarkshire.

Service leader Marc Simpson said: “We’re so proud of our people and the contributions they make to our group. As well as enjoying the recent day trip, they also got a self-esteem boost from winning the award. It’s great to see their skills recognised and praised; which could be a first for some of them.” As Strathaven gears up to host its annual gala day, commuters are being warned of various road closures.

A number of roads in Strathaven will be closed to traffic on Saturday, June 9, for the town’s gala day.

Temporary closures will be in place from 11am until 3pm as follows: A71 Kirk Street, Ryeland Street, A723 Townhead Street, A723 Green Street, A723 Barn Street, and A723 Glasgow Road, Park Crescent, Reed Street, Common Green, Lethame Road, Threestanes Road and Kirklandpark Road, Strathaven.

Signed diversion routes will be in place throughout and drivers are asked to build in additional time for journeys.

Strathaven Academy pupil Heather Waddell will be crowned on Saturday.

The sixth-year pupil will become the first Strathaven Gala Queen of the new millennium – having been born in 2000. She will be joined on the day by her Queen’s Champion and fellow academy student Oliver Franklin.
