SCHOOL ON SHOW MSP’S visit to Holy Cross
Holy Cross High welcomed Deputy First Minister and Minister for Education and Skills, John Swinney, to the school.
The MSP spent a couple of hours talking to pupils and staff and hearing about all the great work that is being done.
Head teacher John Reilly said: “For Holy Cross High School, it was an honour to have Mr Swinney as our guest and for him to see just some of the examples of excellent practice across the school.”
On arrival, Mr Swinney was introduced to school captains Madeleine Mcroberts and Gerard O’hanlon and school vicecaptains, Katy Cluckie and Ciaran Reilly.
The teens showed him around Holy Cross and first on the agenda was a visit to the physical education department where he was introduced to faculty head Grant Ross, and former Holy Cross pupil Bethan Goodwin, who has recently returned from playing netball for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast.
Mr Swinney was introduced to a group of young people he knows well – the Holy Cross High School anti-bullying committee. Recently, the committee were asked to deliver a presentation of their work at the Scottish Parliament, with the MSP as part of the audience.
Following a discussion with a group of the staff; and a presentation of a cake baked by the home economics class, celebrating the centenary of the 1918 Education Act, Mr Swinney completed his visit by joining the staff, young people, parents, family and friends of The Kickstart Group – which provides support for vulnerable young people throughout first year.
