£3.5m plan on display

Your chance to have say on station

- Robert Mitchell

Plans to create an improved transport interchange at Motherwell railway station are now on public display.

A drop-in event will be held in Motherwell Library today (Thursday, June 14) between 10am and 7pm.

Staff from North Lanarkshire Council and Scotrail Alliance will be available to discuss the proposals.

A display will then remain in the library until next Thursday, June 21, and the plans will be on the council’s web site during this time, giving residents and businesses the opportunity to provide feedback.

Funding of £3.5million was approved by Glasgow City Region City Deal in April for the proposal, which involves a high-quality bus, train and bike transport interchange in front of the existing railway station.

This will co-ordinate with Scotrail Alliance’s planned investment in the railway station.

Councillor Allan Graham, convener of the council’s Enterprise and Housing Committee, said: “Our plans for improving transport facilities around Motherwell rail station include an expanded bus facility on Muir Street, new arrangements for taxis, car dropoffs and disabled parking, pedestrian and cycle network improvements, expansion of the park and ride at Farm Street and additional parking at Pollock Street car park.

“The council and Scotrail Alliance are looking for feedback from businesses and people who use the station, the nearby parking and public transport in and around Motherwell on how these ideas will work and if there are any further improvements we could make.

“I would ask people to take some time to look at the plans in the library or online. This is a major development for Motherwell and the wider area so it’s important we get the views of people who do business and use the local transport network.”

Peter O’connell, head of Stations and Retail Development at Scotrail Alliance, added: “We recognise the need for investment at Motherwell as it’s an important rail hub and interchange station. This new transport hub opens up a wealth of possibilities for Motherwell, creating more options and better connections for our customers; for business and leisure travel.

“Once complete, the relationship between the station and Motherwell town centre will be completely transformed – all part of our plans to build the best railway Scotland has ever had.” The plans include: ■ An expanded bus facility on Muir Street

■ New arrangements for taxis, car drop-offs and disabled parking adjacent to the station ■ A reconfigured station forecourt ■ Pedestrian and cycle network improvements

■ Expansion of the park and ride at Farm Street and additional parking at Pollock Street car park. Overall, the project aims to make it easier to use public transport and improve links between bus and train services, as well as reducing road congestion.

The plans include capacity for potential increased bus services to and from Ravenscraig as this site is developed in future.
