Ravenscraig to host event for pupils

- Robert Mitchell

Young people will be able to find out more about life after school at a special event in Motherwell.

The UCAS Higher Education Exhibition, supported by Skills Development Scotland (SDS), will take place at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility on Thursday, September 20.

And organisers say the annual event is the ideal opportunity for young people thinking of leaving school to explore their options.

The exhibition, which is organised by university admissions service UCAS, will host around 20 higher education institutions from Scotland and further afield.

Additional representatives will be on hand to offer advice and information on a variety of courses, learning pathways and careers.

Several seminars and talks will also be on offer at many of this year’s events.

For more details of what will be available at the Lanarkshire event, head to the UCAS website at www.ucas.com.

Careers advisers from Skills Development Scotland will also be at the free event to offer impartial, one-to-one advice on options and opportunities including employment, training, apprenticeships and volunteering.

Paula Johnston from Skills Development Scotland said: “The Higher Education Exhibitions give local young people and their families the opportunity to meet with representatives from across the country and plan out where their future could lie. Choosing the right work and learning route is a big step, and the exhibition gives young people and their parents access to a range of experts, all under one roof.

“Whether you’re kickstarting your research or finalising your decision, it’s important to make sure your choice is well-informed – attending the Higher Education Exhibition is a great starting point.”

The exhibition is primarily aimed at fifth and sixth year pupils, but the event is open to people of all ages interested in finding out more about traditional and nontraditional higher education opportunities, including parents, carers, college students and teachers.

SDS is Scotland’s careers service, with careers advisers working from its careers centres, community premises and with every state secondary school across Scotland.

For young people keen to start planning for their future now, SDS’S trained careers advisers can offer advice, support and guidance on a variety of areas, including further and higher education, local training opportunities and apprenticeships at SDS careers centres nationwide.

Career information and advice is available online via SDS’S award-winning career information and advice web service myworldofwork.co.uk.
