Road closures will continue

- Mark Pirie

Strathaven will endure further road closures as part of multi-million pound energy works.

The existing primary electricity sub-station in the town is nearing the end of its operational life.

And SP Energy Networks (SPEN) are spending £6m to upgrade the system for customers.

The staggered repairs have been ongoing since the middle of May with Hamilton Road closed to Thursday, June 7.

Restrictions were lifted for Strathaven’s gala week but resumed to today (Thursday, June 14) and will kick in again from Monday, June 18, to Sunday, July 8 – after Glassford Gala Day this Saturday.

In addition, Commercial Road will then be closed from Monday, July 9, to Sunday, August 15.

Motorists are being encouraged to avoid these areas during the road closures although diversion routes have been put in place.

The energy scheme is expected to benefit 7000 homes, according to SPEN.

Avondale Tory councillor Graeme Campbell – who had previously feared the impact of road closures on the town and drivers – hailed the running of the project since work began.

He told the Advertiser: “Credit where credit is due – so far the plans have been excellent.

“The issue at the moment has been around the signs and drivers ignoring the signs and then having to turn around.

“There has also been a bit of an issue with heavy traffic going along Coldstream Road.

“There are lorries going along a very tight road.”

Councillor Campbell said: “I have scheduled a meeting with roads to discuss this further.

“It’s not ideal that there are the closures but the feeling so far is that it is going well.”
