Millar Foundation show bags Pop Idol winner

- Andrew Bargh

Townhead parish church is set to welcome a national talent show winner – as part of comic-king Mark Millar’s ambition to give back to his community.

Michelle Mcmanus will perform to excited local residents at the end of this month. The Pop Idol winner is bringing her One-woman show to the town for one of this summer’s cultural events funded by top movie producer Mark, who has seen hit adaptations of his work, including Kick-ass and Kingsman, wow big screen audiences. Mark, who last year signed a multi-million deal with Netflix for the exclusive rights to his comic book writing, holds a burning desire to use his success to help his native community.

All events he organises for Townhead are free for residents to attend.

He told the Ticket: “The Michelle Mcmanus event is on the 30th of this month and it’s going to be amazing.

“Townhead parish church is hosting this one and Michelle is an old pal of mine so I can’t wait.

“It’s her One-woman Show from the Edinburgh Festival and it’s a couple of hours of songs and funny stories.

“As always, we’ll be paying for free tea and cakes for everybody here too so the whole event shouldn’t cost anyone a penny.”

A popular Francie and Josie tribute act performed the first of the Millar Foundation’s summer events to a sold out crowd at St Bartholomew’s church hall on Saturday.

Mark continued: “The big thing our foundation really wants to do is create as many fun cultural events in Townhead as we can over the next five years.

“We’ve been doing this for a while with things like sending all the primary school kids to the Pavilion every Christmas, but we want to go the other way too and bring big events to Townhead.

“The Francie and Josie tribute show has been massive around Scotland in the past few years.

“Even at £20 a head they sold thousands of tickets in a matter of hours when they were in Glasgow so having them perform to 200 people for free in St Bartholomew’s church hall has been a real coup.

“The next thing we’re planning is a free seaside trip to Ayr; and just wait until you see what we’re planning for Christmas!”

Tickets for Michelle Mcmanus’ show are available to local residents from St Bartholomew’s and Townhead parish church.
