Clubs back our running event

- Andy Mcgilvray

Athletics clubs from across the area have got right behind our Hamilten 10K event in September – and YOU can back it too.

The Hamilton Advertiser linked up with the Business Improvement District (BID) to launch the fantastic event, which takes place on Saturday, September 22, from 9.30am.

We have space for 1500 runners in Hamilton’s first ever 10k event, which starts and ends in Castle Street.

The route goes past Low Parks Museum, enters the Palace Grounds past the Davie Cooper Memorial, then through the tunnel towards Strathclyde Park.

Runners then head back north along the waterside before looping back on themselves at the far end of the loch and finishing back in Castle Street.

Local businesses, Police Scotland, South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and South Lanarkshire Council are backing the event.

Mary Whitelaw of Larkhall YMCA Harriers said: “I have seen some of our members sharing information on the Hamilten event and them saying it was a good event for them to take part in.

“For us, we’re always looking for middle distance events, and we usually have to travel for those.

“There are four or five senior members that are definitely interested and talking about it.

“The good thing is that it’s local, and they’re interested in it because they usually have to travel to Glasgow, and that’s really good.

“It’s right on their doorstep, they don’t need to travel to Glasgow or Edinburgh.”

Lesley Mcnicol, secretary of Law and District AAC said: “We have shared the event on our club Facebook and I emailed details to all of our 320 members.

“Law and District AAC are looking forward to participating and supporting Hamilten 10K and think it’s marvellous to have this new event on our doorstep.

“We love the quirky event name and the matching £10 entry fee, which is very affordable, with an exciting goody bag on the day.

“We wish the Hamilten the very best of success on its maiden event, and look forward to many more to come.”

Shona Girdwood, sports development officer at South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, who is helping to organise the event, said: “It’s fantastic, it’s great for the community and the town, and it’s something that has never been done before, so that’s great.

“It’s an event that is available to all levels, from total beginners who want to walk it, or serious athletes – it suits everybody.

“It’s good partnership work with Hamilton BID and Police Scotland, who have closed roads for the event, and Strathclyde Park, who have given us part of the park for the day.

“We hope this is a regular feature and to expand it next year to bring in a 5k and make it more of a running festival, with kids’ races and schools involved.”

Entry to the event couldn’t be easier - just visit www.entrycentral.com/event/108786 and follow the instructions.
