Anger as sauna is shut again

Users hot under the collar

- Shirley Bartynek

Angry leisure centre users have been left hot and bothered for a second time following the unexpected closure of a sauna and steam room.

Users have hit out after Larkhall Leisure Centre after bosses shut the facility’s sauna area not long after it had fully opened back up.

The centre’s steam room had also been closed at the same time for repair.

One elderly user said: “It took them weeks to repair the sauna and then they get it up and running and now it’s closed again.

“I believe there was a problem with the benches but you would have thought that they would have fixed them at the same time as they were carrying out the original repair, after all it was shut for weeks.

“Now the steam room has been closed too. It’s just that many pensioners, like myself, pay for the yearly membership and we don’t seem to have access to all the facilities and there is no refund if they are closed.”

Gerry Campbell, general manager of South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, said: “We have a duty of care to our users and act upon potential health and safety issues as quickly as we can.

“In terms of the sauna, users had reported that the benches required repair.

“The area was closed for a short time whilst work was carried out and the sauna is now open for use again.

“We are currently sourcing a replacement part for the steam room generator. However, once this is done and fitted, the steam room will also be reopened as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to users in the meantime.”

Larkhall Leisure Centre’s sauna, in the facility’s health suite, was closed to users for more than 14 weeks because of a problem with a door in December last year.
