Fans complete climb in memory of friend

Ben Nevis challenge

- Shirley Bartynek

More than 30 big-hearted Rangers fans climbed Scotland’s highest peak in memory of their friend who passed away aged 33.

Larkhall Loyal RSC took part in the gruelling hike up Ben Nevis in a bid to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation in tribute to popular William Strang.

William passed away on August 6 last year from undiagnosed heart disease. He and his wife Laura were childhood sweethearts and had been together since they were 16.

Laura unexpectedly discovered she was pregnant with their first child four days after William passed. Their baby was born on March 31 this year and was named Zander William Strang.

The group have so far raised more than £3500, which will also be split with The Rangers Charity Foundation.

Iain Mcholm, secretary of Larkhall Loyal RSC said: “I would like to thank each and every person who took part in the challenge.

“I have never been so proud of our club’s members. So far on our Virgin money page we are over £3500 of the £5000 we were hoping to raise. We still have to get everyone’s sponsor sheets in, and by the sounds of it we are on course to smash our target.

“We chose the British Heart Foundation as, like most people in the United Kingdom, many of our members have known or at some point themselves have been affected by heart disease.

“Over 200,000 people die each year from heart disease. Only last year, a friend and relation to many of the members, William Strang, died very suddenly from undiagnosed heart disease and this climb was partly in memory of William.

“Our second charity will be The Rangers Charity Foundation.”
