Brian’s out to smash target

Fundraising ace wants your help to raise even more charity cash

- Andrew Mcgilvray

Eddlewood man Brian Thomson wants to smash his previous donation record following his latest charity event – and he wants YOUR help.

Brian and seven others climbed the Munro, Beinn Narnain, for the fourth Hike4hayley charity event, which aims to raise money for Diabetes Scotland, during Diabetes Week.

Beinn Narnain stands at 3038ft and is part of the Arrochar Alps. It took the eight-strong team six hours to complete the climb on Saturday, June 30.

So far they have raised £518.43 (£580.93 when you factor in Gift Aid) and he’s looking to gather in even more.

Brian said: “The weather was absolutely amazing, with stunning views all around us.”

Money raised from the climb will go towards Brian’s Sahara Desert trek, where he will walk for four days in searing heat from November 9-15.

The trek will take him from M’hamid El Rhozlane to L’erg Zahar, the highest sand dunes in the region.

All in, Brian will walk just under 100km. Brian is no stranger to fundraising, and has raised thousands for Diabetes Scotland over the years.

In May 2017 Brian – who has been fundraising for five years, and running events for three – was presented with an award for Fundraiser of the Year in Scotland from Diabetes UK, at a glittering ceremony in Glasgow.

Last year he and nine others climbed Ben Arthur, with the full team making the 2900ft summit.

In November and December, Brian trekked the 17,600ft to Everest Base Camp, raising over £9000 in the process. Brian’s efforts will continue with an 80s night in The Auld Hoose in Hamilton on Saturday, October 20, featuring music from Moonlighters, and a buffet.

Tickets are £10 and are available by contacting Brian on Facebook or by emailing Hike4hayley@gmail.com.
