Disruption at park
Council issue warning to public
Thousands of people are set to descend on Strathclyde Country Park for the Glasgow 2018 European Championships – but council chiefs have warned the public to be aware of some disruption as they set up for the event.
Significantly, the main road through Strathclyde Park will be closed from August 1 to 13.
And people can also expect changes to park facilities from now until August 19.
The European Rowing and European Triathlon Championships are in the park and there’s lots of other activities going on as part of the GO LIVE! In the Park free event.
Rowing takes place between August 2 and 5, with the triathlon going on between August 9 and 12.
On these eight days, there will be free circus-themed family activities at GO LIVE! in the Park.
And on Sunday, August 12, there is a massive Tri in the Park event for amateur triathletes of all ages and abilities.
People can expect disruption from now until Sunday, August 19, to allow the infrastructure to be set up and then cleared.
North Lanarkshire Council are expecting large crowds for all the events and increased traffic in and around the park.
A statement from the council said: “The car parks at the Watersports Centre will close to the public until August 17 for the main car park and August 19 for the waterside area.
“The beach car park and surrounding grass area will close for construction of a spectator stand. From Monday, July 16, the fun boats and bike hire will close.
“The North shore beach car park will close to the public. However the path around the loch will remain completely open until July 28, with restricted access to parts of the path until August 15.
“Car parking will be available in some of the large car parks beyond the Watersports Centre until Saturday, July 28.
“From Monday, July 30, the cafe in the Watersports Centre will close until August 12. The Crest Road path will close until August 6.
“Construction of the GO LIVE! in the Park site at the Clyde Park area will start on Monday, July 30, with additional traffic bringing equipment to the park via the Hamilton Road entrance.”
A number of training days for athletes will take place ahead of the Championships, when access to the Watersports Centre will be restricted. These will be held on July 31, August 1 and 8.
The roads through the park will close at 4pm on Wednesday, August 1, until 11.59pm on Sunday, August 12, at two locations:
• Park Road, from Bothwellhaugh Road to Hamilton Road, and
• Bothwellhaugh Road, from Strathclyde Country Park Road to the Bothwellhaugh Cemetery access road.
On the days of competition, there will be no parking within the park. M&DS Scotland’s Theme Park will, however, remain open with access from the Raith Interchange.
