Dementia project on award shortlist Jubilee Club joins finalists

- Stefanie Mccourt

Stonehouse’s Jubilee Club is in the running for a top award.

The group have been shortlisted in Scotland’s Dementia Awards, being named as a finalist in the best dementia friendly community initiative category.

Winners will be announced on September 20 at the Glasgow Marriott Hotel.

The Jubilee Club is a social afternoon for people with dementia and their carers, focusing mainly on music.

The sessions offer singalongs, quizzes, entertainers and outings and has a weekly attendance of more than 80 people who enjoy an afternoon of laughter, music and friendship.

The Jubilee Club is a nonprofitmaking organisation run by volunteers. It meets at the Stonehouse Lifestyles Centre every Thursday at 1.30pm.

Chair Christine Dickie said: “We are thrilled to be named as finalists in Scotland’s Dementia Awards.

“Over the six years since the club began we’ve grown to a membership of over 80 with two or three enquiries a week. People travel from miles around as what we offer is still fairly unique.

“As well as music and quizzes and other theme events, we have been extending our befriending support service for those members with dementia and those who live alone experiencing loneliness by collecting them from their homes, being their responsible person while at the club and safely seeing them back home.

“However, we need more volunteers with experience of dementia as there is such a need for this service. Our motto is ‘music…laughter… friendship’ and no one should ever feel alone.”

Scotland’s Dementia Awards is a partnership between Alzheimer Scotland, NHS Education for Scotland and the Scottish Social Services Council.

Alzheimer Scotland’s chief executive Henry Simmons said: “These awards are a fantastic opportunity to recognise the great achievements of projects and teams involved in dementia care and support across Scotland.

“We are thrilled to see so many positive collaborations taking place, helping to address stigma, break down barriers and ensure that nobody faces dementia alone.

“We look forward to celebrating the work of all our finalists and winners on the day.”
