‘Gow dump Lanark in six-goal cup thriller

-

Lesmahagow beat Lanark United 4-2 on Saturday to take an early lead in Group 16 of the Sectional League Cup, while Carluke Rovers won 2-1 away to Newmains United.

Ian Watt netted from a Stuart Annetts cross to put Lanark ahead but Ryan Innes levelled after a good turn outside the box.

Scott Falconer scored from a Jordan Whitefield corner to give ’Gow a half-time lead.

Annetts levelled, but even after Mark Hallside was sent off, ’Gow edged ahead through Kyle Weir, then Jon Mcstay hit a last-minute clincher to make it 4-2.

Lesmahagow boss Robert Irving said: “We played well in the first half, with Lanark coming on to a better game in the second half.”

‘Gow then clocked up another 4-2 win on Monday night when Mark Fitzpatrick, Mcstay, Innes and Paul Woodlock scored against Newmains United.

Carluke Rovers were the more dangerous looking side against Newmains on Saturday and Mark Cassidy and Sean Mckenna combined to send Peter Byrne through to score the only goal of the game in 60 minutes.

Mckenna had twice forced good saves from United keeper Gordon Bruce before the goal.

Lanark surged back into contention on Monday when they beat Carluke Rovers 2-1 before a good crowd at the John Cumming Stadium.

United started well, with Watt twice going close before he scored in 35 minutes with a low shot.

Mark Haddow thought he had doubled Lanark’s lead but was penalised for a push on a defender.

However, they went 2-0 up early in the second half when Annetts was brought down for a penalty which Watt thundered home.

Rovers pulled a goal back in 83 minutes when Cassidy fired in a shot that was deflected past Martyn Meek in the Lanark goal.
