’Well ease through

-

Motherwell fought back from a goal down to ease their way past Clyde and win Group G to qualify for the last 16 of the Betfred Cup.

Sustained pressure from the visitors failed to make its mark – and Clyde took the lead in 31 minutes through David Goodwillie.

However, goals from Curtis Main, Danny Johnson and Conor Sammon in the last 15 minutes set up a tie at Livingston.

Boss Stephen Robinson was pleased with his side’s never-say-die attitude.

“These results are important,”he said.“i thought we made rusty defensive decisions and this is something we will need to improve on next week.

“The boys showed a great amount of composure and character. There were tricky conditions with the wind and the pitch but they stuck to their task.

“We got into good positions but without a good end product. We had 19 shots but not enough of them were on target – that needs to improve.

“There is improvement required from everybody, but it is still early in pre-season and we will get better.”

In the opening half hour, Motherwell laid siege to the Clyde goal with Main and Andy Rose firing over, while Elliott Frear had a shot well saved.

Clyde scored with their first effort on target and Goodwillie nearly scored a second before Motherwell bagged their late goals.
