Broadband problems are subject of survey
Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP Ged Killen has launched a survey throughout Blantyre seeking to hear from constituents about the challenges facing them because of poor broadband service in the area.
This follows concerns from several constituents as well as local organisations and businesses that the poor internet service is having a negative impact on the local economy.
There has also been a growing concern that new build houses are receiving a poor service due to overcapacity cabinets.
Already over 100 constituents have replied to the survey which was launched less than two weeks ago. Initial feedback suggests that around two thirds of households believe that they get a worse service than quoted by their broadband provider and that nearly one third of households in Blantyre and Cambuslang have no option to access superfast broadband.
Ged Killen MP said: “Since being elected to parliament it has been clear to me that the state of broadband services across Rutherglen and Hamilton West is below par and is hindering economic growth.
“This unfortunate situation is also affecting those who choose to make their home in the area. A decent internet connection is vital for residents to access banking services, information, shopping and an endless number of everyday tasks.
“Good, fast and uninterrupted broadband is an important piece of infrastructure, particularly as the online services sector grows and more and more people work from home.
“By gathering information in this survey we can better understand the shortcomings in digital connectivity across the constituency and seek to make improvements.”
