Work shuts busy road

Overnight closure of A71

- Shirley Bartynek

Motorists can expect to face six nights of road closures on a busy Lanarkshire road.

The overnight closures will be in place to allow vital work to resurface part of the road between Stonehouse and Canderside Toll to be carried out during September.

In order to keep the disruption to a minimum for road users the majority of the work will take place during the night but it will require the closure of the A71 between Stonehouse and Canderside Toll for six consecutive nights.

The road will be closed between 8pm and 5am from the evening of Sunday, September 9 to the morning of Saturday, September 15.

South Lanarkshire Council Head of Roads and Transportation Gordon Mackay said:“we recognise that this is an important road link for people in Stonehouse and other road users.

“These overnight closures have been planned to ensure this resurfacing work can be completed safely while causing the least possible disruption.

“We will do everything we can to maintain access to local properties during the closure periods and we apologise in advance for the unavoidable inconvenience this important maintenance work will cause.”

During the periods of overnight closure the official diversion route will be via Strathaven and Hamilton.

From Stonehouse take the A71 to Strathaven, follow the A723 from Strathaven to Hamilton, the A72 Carlisle Road from Hamilton to Larkhall and the B7078 through Larkhall to reach Canderside Toll.

From Canderside Toll take the sa me route in the reverse direction.

Road users should allow additional time for all journeys which would normally involve the use of the Stonehouse to Canderside Toll section of A71 during the overnight closures from September 9 to September 15 and that they are advised to plan journeys accordingly.
