Scott’s all set for charity run

Blind runner can’t wait to pound streets

- Leona Greenan

Blind charity champ Scott Cunningham has signed up to take part in Hamilton’s 10k run next month

The Larkhall man will be guided round the Hamilten route by his friend Willie Cowie from Stonehouse.

And the 48-year-old can’t wait to take part in the event that is being brought to you by Hamilton Business Improvement District (BID) and the Hamilton Advertiser.

He said: “Willie and I have been running together for the last number of months, and we use a rope as a tether and vocal directions.

“Willie not only is a great runner but he is also a fantastic guide, being very descriptive of the surroundings and whatever particular track we are running on.

“A run like the Hamilten 10k is what this area has been needing for some time.

“It’ll be great to have all ages and abilities making their way round the route on September 22. And as Willie and I have the Great Scottish Run the following weekend, it’ll be an ideal part of our training.”

Scott, who works as fundraising officer for The Haven charity in Lanarkshire, started running just two years ago and has already completed marathons in London and Manchester as well as four half-marathons.

He added: “Running blind is such a buzz. I suppose it’s similar to an extreme sport, having to have total trust in your sighted guide and of course remember your left from your right!”

And Willie (64) added: “I really enjoy my time running with Scott. Having never before run any length a year or so ago to now being out three or four times a week – he’s a hard taskmaster.

“Here’s hoping the day is a great success and leads to it being an annual event that gets Hamilton established on the 10k circuit.”
