Early morning fire causes rush-hour chaos
Smoke and flames engulfed a building in Hamilton yesterday (Wednesday, September 5) as a fire ripped through it.
Fire crews rushed to the scene of the blaze at the site on Muir Street, which houses The Tyre Factory and Sponge `N’hoses.
It took firefighters hours to bring the blaze under control, which created problems for motorists during rush hour.
A huge blaze took control of a tyre firm in Hamilton town centre yesterday (Wednesday, September 5) causing morning rushhour chaos.
Smoke and flames could be seen coming from Muir Street for miles around the town.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at the site around The Tyre Factory and Sponge ‘N’ Hoses in the early hours of the morning.
A fire service spokesman said yesterday: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 5.37am on Wednesday, September 5, to reports of a fire which had taken hold within a single-storey building on Muir Street, Hamilton.
“Operations control immediately mobilised a number of fire engines, including two aerial appliances and firefighters are tackling the flames. Crews currently remain at the scene.”
Sponge ‘N’ Hoses posted on social media a video of the firefighters still at the scene, followed by a post which read: “Looking like we’ll be closed for business.”
South Lanarkshire Council issued a traffic warning via their social media pages to alert drivers to the possible disruption on the nearby affected roads.
Their post yesterday read: “Further update after today’s fire in Hamilton: Muir Street, eastbound is currently closed and a local diversion via Almada Street, Union Street, Leechlee Road and Lower Auchingramont Road is in place.”
